Today’s integrated perimeter security management environment has become increasingly complex. There are hundreds of point technology manufacturers, few legitimate technical standards and multiple disparate/ proprietary data formats, any of which need to be accommodated in a single solution. These and many other technical risks and challenges often associated with the design, implementation and maintenance of an integrated perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS) are addressed in an excerpt from a design study commissioned by ICx Technologies.

While much attention has been paid to efforts on the federal level to enhance our safety in
the aftermath of September 11th, state and local programs also directly affect the security
and civil liberties of Americans. For many communities, the desire to implement video
surveillance systems stems not from a reaction to September 11th, but from the desire for
crime control. This report is designed to provide a set of practical guidelines for state and
local officials who are contemplating installation of—or who have already installed—public
video surveillance systems.

Today's IP networked video surveillance systems are capable of providing a far greater resolution, flexibility, reliability and increased cost savings in comparison to conventional analog video solutions. In the past, wireless IP video surveillance has been viewed as an "ad hoc" solution with limited reliability. Wireless mesh networks are changing that perception as more customers implement video surveillance over wireless mesh networks. Robust high performance, low latency and multi-hop scalability enable range and coverage that wasn't possible only a few years ago.

Drawing on lessons learned from the successful OPSCAN project to point the way forward for interoperability in public-safety and other sectors By Shahid Ahmed and Rob Casselman. One of the greatest tests for any government is crafting an effective, coordinated response to emergencies. With lives often at stake, effective emergency response requires multiple government and non-government agencies working together in a coordinated, collaborative environment. That makes achieving interoperability between their communication systems vital. The variety of personnel and communications equipment involved makes a high performance solution mandatory and yet, an extremely difficult goal to achieve
